FOUR SWANS FESTIVAL:        'BALLYCASTLE ON THE WAVES'

19th – 24th August 2008

TUESDAY 19TH

Cool Seas Roadshow Ferry Terminal – 11am-6pm

Life-size models of a Great White Shark, Bottlenose Dolphins, Grey Seal and Leatherback Turtle (plus display panels and information table) all in the Ballycastle Ferry Terminal.  The Cool Seas Roadshow promotes better awareness of the Marine Environment and its amazing wildlife.  www.mcsuk.org

WEDNESDAY 20TH

Cool Seas Roadshow Ferry Terminal – 10-6pm

Drumming workshop – Phoenix Drum will prepare drummers for participation in Sunday’s Carnival.  All welcome, whatever your age or experience.  7.30pm, in the Ferry Terminal.

‘Black is a shining light’ - Queen’s University Chaplain Steve Stockman and photographer Gordon Ashbridge present images and reflections from South Africa’s townships.  ‘Sad…and beautiful place’, the material gathered into a book will be available for purchase, supporting their work with Capetownship. Glen Craft, Ann Street, 2pm – 8.30pm.  The photographer and poet will talk of their experiences in South Africa at 3pm and 7pm.

 

THURSDAY 21ST

Boredbrand – Digital Funfair on the seafront – a Marquee full of make it yourself music and funfair fun for all ages. 2 – 10pm

Weaving sea life – sea creatures from willow and more – award winning artist Louise McLean, Seafront Exhibition Centre/seafront.  11-4pm Come and join in – try your hand at willow weaving and help decorate the Seafront with sea creatures…

"In the beginning, the earth was a place of water....."  Storytelling with Dovie Thomason, First Nations, USA.  11.30am in the Yurt (round tent) on the Seafront (numbers limited but if the weather’s good we’ll take the walls of the Yurt down!) and then 2.30pm in the Ballycastle Library (numbers also limited – please confirm attendance beforehand with the Library).

FRIDAY 22ND

A seafront Circus – Streetwise Community Circus performers teach circus skills for beginners.  All ages.   Seafront (alternative venue announced if weather demands!) 11-5pm

From Ballycastle beach to the Bay of Bengal  – an Irish family share their experience of living in Calcutta through an evening of film, music and art.  Ferry Terminal, 7.30pm

Photo Exhibition:  Holy Trinity Church, The Diamond, Ballycastle.  10am-6pm  Fairhead Photographic Group return with a magnificent third exhibition of contemporary photographs with vintage material provided by the Causeway Museum Service.

 

SATURDAY 23RD

Sea in the Centre  Local artist Rachel Craig with volunteers from the Co-op –will transform the monument in the Diamond with a sea flavour.  This work will incorporate a piece made from light bulbs given in exchange for energy saving bulbs, ‘highlighting’ renewable energy options in the face of climate change.

‘Puffin Ball’ Sheskburn Hall, Saturday 23rd August, 11am – 2pm. Dance, music, fancy dress, costume making and activities for young children and their families. 

The Puffin, the delightful ‘Clown of the Sea’ is a summer visitor to the bird reserve on Rathlin Island but numbers of Puffins have declined, here and elsewhere in the British Isles.  One of the culprits is believed to be climate change… 

This event will be organised with Dalriada Rural Sure Start, with some extra support from Puffin Books.  Limited ‘light bites’ will be provided.  Children are invited to participate in the Carnival Parade through Ballycastle the following afternoon (Sunday 24th), and to come dressed as Puffins!  (Accompanied by adults, please.)

Stones on the beach – with artist Chris Head.  Come and decorate the beach with stone pictures and patterns. 

‘Swim for Life’ Rathlin to Ballycastle swim.  International long distance swimmers race against the tides and raise awareness of climate change.  Swim starts from Rathlin at 2.30pm and the first swimmers are expected to arrive on Ballycastle beach by around 4.30pm.  (Weather dependent!) Organised by Kenny Boyd and the Irish Long Distance Swimming Association

In an Octopuses Garden…  Underwater film between Rathlin and Ballycastle, with Joe Breen, Head of Aquatic Science, Northern Ireland Environmental Agency.   Clips from this stunning new footage were recently shown on BBC Newsline. Ferry Terminal, 7.30pm

SUNDAY 24TH

Carnival Parade: ‘Ballycastle on the Waves’.  The sea theme will be paraded through the town from the entrance of the Altananam Estate at the top of the town (Coleraine Road), to the seafront.  Parade will start walking by 3.30pm.  Drums, stilts, music, sea dragon, puffins (special visit) and who knows what else!

Everyone welcome – dress up in that wacky costume you’ve always wanted to wear, sea theme or not, walk along, join in, have fun.  Enjoy the lovely weather!

Music on the seafront:  4 – 7pm The Carnival Parade will lead to the seafront and to music from the lively African sound of Afresh, and the funky jazz of the Jahm Band, with support from local musicians and Moyle Music Collective.

All events are free of charge.  All donations will be welcomed and will help towards the continuation of this Festival.

Remember, there is no such thing as bad weather

       only inappropriate clothing!
